Buffer capacity of solutions of strong bases.

A strong base can act as buffer in solutions. The buffer capacity, β, can be calculated using the following equation:

According to the above equation, the buffer capacity increases as hydroxyl ion concentration increases (pH increases). The following table and figure show how the buffer capacity of a strong base changes with pH.

According to the above table and figure, it can be seen that the buffer capacity is near zero at pH values below 12. However, it increases significantly at pH values above 12.
